Pierre Littbarski on the Beauty of Japan

Pierre Littbarski on the Beauty of Japan

A Second Home

I lived in Japan for a total of 10 years. Thus, this country became my second home. I married there once again. Throughout these wonderful years, I experienced the culture, the food, and the people up close. I would like to share with you here my time in Japan.

Culinary Delights

During my time in Japan, I had the pleasure of experiencing the diversity and sophistication of Japanese cuisine in all its facets. From the delicate and fresh flavors of sushi and sashimi to the hearty and delicious ramen soups, each dish impressed me anew. I was particularly fascinated by the skill with which the dishes were prepared. The care and precision in the preparation are reflected not only in the taste but also in the aesthetics of the dishes. Undoubtedly, a highlight of my culinary experiences was a traditional Kaiseki menu. Here, many small courses are served, which are perfectly coordinated and artfully arranged.

Taste-wise as well as visually, Japanese cuisine differs greatly from Western cuisine. Additionally, Japanese food is considered the healthiest in the world. Fresh ingredients, plenty of vegetables, and fermented foods are particularly popular here. Thus, many dishes are low in calories and full of valuable nutrients. As an athlete, this was especially interesting to me. But even after my career, it's important for me to keep my body healthy and vital. Therefore, Japanese cuisine, even though I live in Germany again, is still a solid part of my eating habits.

Mental Strength

In Japan, mental health is closely linked to culture. The focus on discipline and endurance shapes the mindset of many people and leads to an impressive mental strength. As a footballer, I admired these qualities in the Japanese team.

Their ability to overcome obstacles, even in the most difficult situations, is remarkable. This mental strength is not only evident on the field but also in everyday life. Along with good self-reflection and a realistic view of things, discipline and endurance have a positive impact on well-being.

Physical Fitness

The Japanese way of life promotes a healthy physical condition through balanced nutrition and regular exercise. As a coach, I observed how the players developed very well into a healthy lifestyle through their discipline and dedication.

The combination of healthy eating and regular exercise not only contributes to physical fitness but also strengthens the immune system and enhances overall well-being. This healthy lifestyle is an important part of Japanese culture and significantly contributes to people's health.

Multicultural Influence

Japan has a rich cultural history and is increasingly opening up to Western influences, especially in the area of health and fitness. When Lukas Podolski moved to Japan, I gave him a lot of advice, including on these topics. Cultures are different, and that's what's beautiful.

An exchange of ideas and practices between different cultures can lead to a holistic understanding of health. The significance of balanced nutrition and a healthy lifestyle can be complemented by multiple perspectives and levels of knowledge. I believe everyone should expand their knowledge on these essential topics. Interesting insights and great ideas can be found very well in other countries for this purpose.

Respect for Nature

The tradition of respect for nature is deeply rooted in Japanese society and helps maintain a balance between body and mind. Time spent outdoors and an appreciation for natural resources promote well-being and contribute to stress reduction. The breathtaking nature of the country also captivated me directly.

As diverse as the traditions of the country are, so too are its vegetation and landscapes. Picturesque mountains, subtropical forests, coniferous forests, waterfalls, and beaches make nature a true treasure. Especially during cherry blossom season, which transforms entire cities into pink-red seas of blossoms, there's a strong inclination to cherish nature to the best of our abilities.

Parting and Memories

Parting from Japan was not easy for me. During my time as a coach, I not only experienced sporting successes but also formed friendships and had unforgettable moments. The warm hospitality of the people and the fascinating culture of the country have left lasting impressions on my heart. Japan will always hold a special place in my memory, and I am grateful for the valuable experiences I was able to gather there. This time has shaped and enriched me not only as a coach but also as a person.
