Selenium: for the thyroid
The trace element selenium is far more important for our cells and our health than is often assumed.
It is an essential component of various enzyme systems that neutralize free radicals. Selenium thus contributes to cell protection. Selenium is also important for the immune system and contributes to strong nails and strong hair.
Since selenium can contribute to normal sperm formation the trace element can be important for male fertility.
The thyroid gland is also dependent on an adequate supply of selenium for its function.
Selenium from selenium yeast
In this process, yeast is grown on selenium-rich culture media and then dried. This allows the yeast to naturally synthesize a high proportion of organic selenium. The resulting yeast has a high concentration of the selenium-containing proteins selenomethionine and selenocysteine, these compounds are also naturally found in plants.
Organic selenium compounds can be absorbed by the body better than inorganic ones. Selenite and selenate compounds must first be converted into biologically active selenoproteins such as selenomethionine or selenocysteine in the organism.
The American Academy of Sciences considers 200 micrograms a day to be safe and appropriate as a dietary supplement.
