Acerola and rosehip are among the best-known natural sources of vitamin C and combine two fruits from very different regions of the world. While acerola grows mainly in tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas, rosehip is widespread in Europe. Both fruits are characterised by their bright colours and their natural content of vitamin C and secondary plant substances. The diversity of their plant companions is particularly interesting.

Acerola (Malpighia glabra), also known as the acerola cherry, originally comes from Central America and the Caribbean. Its small, red fruits resemble cherries on the outside but are not botanically related to them. A special feature is its exceptionally high natural vitamin C content, which can vary depending on ripeness, growing conditions and processing. In addition to vitamin C, acerola contains various plant substances such as carotenoids, flavonoids and anthocyanins. Because its fruits are delicate, acerola is often processed immediately after harvesting.

Rosehips are the fruits of various species of rose, in particular the native dog rose (Rosa canina). In autumn they glow red to orange in hedges and at the edges of woods and serve as a natural source of food for numerous birds. Inside are small nutlets surrounded by fleshy fruit tissue. Rosehips have been used for generations for tea, purée and jam. In addition to vitamin C, they contain carotenoids, flavonoids and pectins, among other things.
