Vitamin D3 500 I.U. – 100 capsules

Vitamin D3: sun vitamin

Vitamin D has been given the nickname "sun vitamin" because it can be produced by the body itself. To do this, it needs the sun's UV-B radiation. An interesting synthesis takes place in the upper layers of the skin when exposed to sufficient sunlight: UV-B radiation converts a form of cholesterol into vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). In the liver, D3 is then converted into calcidiol, the storage form of vitamin D. It is available in the blood for about 15 days and, if necessary, calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, is made from it in the kidneys.

Function of vitamin D

On the one hand, vitamin D has the task of absorbing calcium from the intestines, so that the body always has a normal blood calcium level. This calcium is needed for bone and tooth mineralisation and for muscle function.
On the other hand, vitamin D plays an important role in the immune system, as it activates the killer cells of the defence system.

Vitamin D deficiency

Although the body is able to produce vitamin D itself, vitamin D deficiency is widespread because the skin is less and less exposed to direct sunlight these days. Think of our elderly people, for example, whose daily lives are hardly ever spent outside.
The amount of vitamin D produced also depends on the climate, the amount of direct sunlight, the number of pigments in the skin, the time of year, the use of sunscreen products and age.

With Fairvital's food supplement you can prevent a vitamin D deficiency or maintain a normal vitamin D level in your blood. Each capsule contains 500 I.U. (12.5µg) cholecalciferol.

Food containing vitamin D

Unfortunately, vitamin D is only found in limited amounts in food. The best sources are, for example, high-fat fish such as herring or salmon, egg, cheese and butter, as well as mushrooms, avocado and margarine enriched with vitamin D.

Vitamin D is present in animal and vegetable foods in two different forms: Animal-based sources provide vitamin D3, while plant-based sources contain vitamin D2. In general, the body can convert vitamin D2 into vitamin D3 very well, but the effectiveness of vitamin D3 is better because the body can use it directly.
