What is Shatavari?
Shatavari is traditionally used in the Indian Ayurveda. The climbing plant from the family of Asparagaceae develops a sophisticated root system with tuberous roots, which have been used for generations for health.
Shatavari: popular vital substance for women
Shatavari is the most important Ayurvedic rejuvenation agent for women, just like ashwagandha for men. Translated literally, shatavari means: “she who has 100 husbands”. The name is supposed to reflect the toning and rejuvenating effect on the female genital and reproductive system. Shatavari is said to nourish the ova, increase the fertility and promote the women’s love and devotion. The plant has also a harmonising effect on unpleasant feelings during menstruation. In old records, the plant is described to have positive effects for the memory and the intelligence.
Support for the mucous membranes
In the traditional Indian health care, shatavari has been used for centuries as a gentle analgesic, aphrodisiac (especially for women) and to stimulate lactation. For dry mucous membranes of the inner organs and the genital system, shatavari is a popular remedy as well. The moisture conserving properties of shatavari are supposed to be beneficial for soft stool.
Shatavari has a balancing effect on well-being
During menopause, shatavari is an excellent nutrition, because the plant contains many phytohormones (e.g. isoflavones). Furthermore, shatavari is said to have a cooling effect on the body, so that unpleasant menopausal symptoms can be reduced.
Shatavari for men
Shatavari is not only a supplement for women. The plant seems to have a beneficial effect on the male sexuality, supports the production of sperm cells and prevents signs of age.
Shatavari is an adaptogen
Adaptogens are plants with an universal, intelligent effect on the organism. Where necessary, the stimulate weak bodily functions and reduce excess reactions. Simultaneously, they strengthen the immune system and the health in general. However, adaptogenic plants might have different effects on different people.
Ingredients of shatavari
The proven adaptogenic effect of shatavari is attributed to the saponin content, which are called shatavarins. The plant also contains sarsasapogenin, quercetin, rutin, hyperoside, diosgenin, sitosterol, stigmasterol and asparagamine.
