Vitavital: rich multivitamin
Vitamins are organic compounds which the organism does not need as energy sources but for other vital functions, but which the metabolism cannot synthesise or can only synthesise to a limited extent. Vitamins must therefore be taken in with food, as they are essential.
Water-soluble or fat-soluble
Vitamins are generally classified according to whether they are water-soluble (vitamin C and B vitamins) or fat-soluble (vitamins A, D, E and K). While the body is able to store fat-soluble vitamins in the liver, fat or muscle tissue and adrenal glands, excess water-soluble vitamins are excreted through the kidneys.
The only exception is vitamin B12, which is stored in the liver.
Vitamins for the immune system
Although many vitamins are important for the functioning of the immune system, vitamin C (scientifically: ascorbic acid) is by far the best known and most popular. As soon as a cold is on its way or the cold season approaches, many people therefore turn to the traditional "hot lemon".
The idea behind this is the relatively high vitamin C content of the lemon, but unfortunately the vitamin is very heat-sensitive and is already destroyed at temperatures above 40° degrees. For this reason, it makes more sense to use other types of fruit or vegetables that can be consumed without being exposed to heat. A good alternative is to take food supplements that provide you with high doses of vitamin C.
Vitamin A and D as well as the B vitamins B6, B12 and B9 also support the immune system.
Vitamins for the nervous system and energy
B vitamins are known to be essential for the functioning of the nervous system, among other things. The most important of these are B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cobalamin) and B7 (biotin).
In the nervous system, they are responsible for protecting the nerve cells and supporting regeneration, as well as transmitting nerve impulses. They are also important for cognitive functions and mental balance.
Another important function in which B vitamins play a role is energy metabolism. They ensure that the macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) from food are converted into energy that the body needs for a variety of tasks. These include maintaining body temperature, organ functions and movement.
Vitamins for cell protection
A number of vitamins also have antioxidant properties. Vitamin E and vitamin C are particularly well known for this, but thiamine (B1) and riboflavin (B2) are also able to neutralise excess free radicals and thus protect the cells in the organism.
Vitamins for the skin
The best known and most popular vitamin when it comes to skin health is biotin (vitamin B7). As it also ensures beautiful, strong hair, it is also known as a "beauty vitamin". Vitamins A, B2 and B3 are also essential micronutrients for both skin and mucous membranes.
Carotenoids
The fat-soluble pigments can be found in a variety of plants, but also in animals. Beta-carotene from vegetables and fruits is known to most people as a precursor of vitamin A, but nature also has many other carotenoids that are interesting for the human organism.
Lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes or rose hips, has antioxidant properties and can help to reduce free radicals.
The two carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, for example, come from tagetes flowers. In the body, they are found as pigments in the retina, especially in the yellow spot (macula). In plants, the two pigments have the task of protecting the plant cells from high levels of light.
Polyphenols
The polyphenols quercetin, hesperidin and rutin belong to the subgroup of flavonoids, which are also attributed antioxidant properties. As colouring agents they can be found in a number of plants and fruits.
