Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble compound produced by the body that occurs in almost all human cells. It is particularly important in cell structures with a high energy turnover, such as the mitochondria. The name ubiquinone refers to its wide distribution in the body.
In mitochondrial metabolism, Q10 acts as an electron carrier. It can switch between its oxidised form, ubiquinone, and its reduced form, ubiquinol. Both forms belong to the body's natural Q10 system.
